The challenge

In the Vogelsang district in the west of Keulen, Germany, the SNAKE interim school was constructed within a period of only sixteen months. The three-floor building was originally slated to be an extension to the TRIOTOP Keulen industrial premises, but was redesigned into an interim site for the new 'Wasseramselweg' network of schools. Thanks to its rapid construction, the building was completed in time for the start of the 2019/2020 school year. The 33-m2 green façade is the striking focal point of the building. HB Watertechnologie designed and implemented the irrigation system.

Our approach

The building’s contours and conspicuous brickwork façade have garnered it its moniker: SNAKE. It is also reflected in the design of the 7.4 x 4.5-m green façade. By using winter creeper (Euronymus fortunei) – with its variegated foliage – the body of a snake emerges, while the red leaves of red hook sedge (Uncinia rubra ‘Everflame’) form the head. All the plant species used are hardy, ensuring that the wall stays green all year round. The irrigation method specified by HB Watertechnologie consists of the latest technology in the area of integrated nutrient feeding systems and remotely controlled measuring and regulation techniques – the iMC Box.

The result

A spectacular SemperGreenwall that can be monitored remotely thanks to the various sensors. HB Watertechnologie also carries out the complete maintenance of the irrigation system, ensuring consistent quality.
