The challenge
The concept for Hotel Jakarta was developed on behalf of WestCord Hotels by the firm SeARCH Architecten. The energy-neutral hotel boasts 200 rooms, various eateries and bars, a swimming pool and a large sub-tropical indoor garden. The hotel, situated on the Java wharf on Java Island, symbolises the island’s maritime past. This is not only reflected in terms of the building’s design and use of materials, but also the large subtropical indoor garden located in the hotel’s central atrium. Hortus Botanicus botanical gardens association developed the planting scheme for the garden during the tender phase of the project, with a decided Southeast Asian theme. This challenging concept demanded a detailed development of both the building up of the garden substrate as well as the technical features and the selection and arrangement of the plants. In addition, the hotel had an ambition of garnering a BREEAM-NL Excellent grade for the building.
The approach
Copijn Tuin- en Landschapsarchitecten created a design for the layering structure for the ground of the indoor garden in the atrium, in which large distinct layers were created using lightweight 100% recycled layering materials. The irrigation method specified by HB Watertechnologie consists of the latest technology in the area of integrated nutrient feeding systems and remotely controlled measuring and regulation techniques – the iMC Box. Energy-saving measures were implemented, such as the collection of rainwater for irrigating the tropical indoor garden. The system extracts rainwater from a basin located inside the building. Copijn Groenaanleg en Beheer facilitated the coordination and creation of the garden within a very short turnaround time. During the same period, HB Watertechnologie installed the irrigation system within the negotiated timeline and according to the necessary work process.
The result
The large subtropical indoor garden is the green symbol of the energy-neutral Hotel Jakarta located at the head of the Java Island in Amsterdam. This impressive subtropical garden covers two floors and fills the atrium with 6 to 10-metre-high palms selected with the utmost care specially for Hotel Jakarta.
Thanks to its impressive sustainability performance, Hotel Jakarta Amsterdam is legitimately an energy-neutral building and, with a BREEAM-NL Excellent certification, is the most sustainable hotel of The Netherlands.
